Clay for Beginners: Your First Enrichment Table

Clay is a data enrichment platform that connects to 100+ providers. Your first table should import a prospect list, add an enrichment column (start with People Data Labs for email), use a formula to validate results, and export to your CRM or outbound tool.

Clay is the most powerful data enrichment tool in the GTM stack, but it can be overwhelming when you first open it. The interface looks like a spreadsheet, but it is actually a programmable data pipeline with 100+ data provider integrations, AI capabilities, and workflow automation built in.

This guide walks you through creating your first enrichment table — from importing a prospect list to exporting enriched, verified data to your CRM. No prior Clay experience needed.

What Clay Does (and Why It Matters)

Without Clay, enriching a prospect list means logging into multiple tools (Apollo, ZoomInfo, Clearbit, Lusha), searching manually, copying data between tabs, and hoping the emails are valid. For 100 leads this is annoying. For 10,000 leads it is impossible.

Clay centralizes this. You import a list, add enrichment columns that pull from any provider, write formulas to clean and validate the data, and export the result. The entire process runs in minutes instead of days.

Step 1: Create Your Table and Import Data

Sign in to Clay and click "New Table." You have three options for getting data in:

  • CSV upload — drag and drop a spreadsheet. Best for static lists from LinkedIn Sales Navigator exports or event attendees.

  • CRM integration — connect HubSpot, Salesforce, or Pipedrive and pull contacts directly. Best for enriching existing pipeline.

  • Clay's built-in search — find companies and people directly in Clay using filters like industry, headcount, location, and technologies used.

For your first table, start with a CSV upload of 50–100 prospects. You want columns for: First Name, Last Name, Company Name, Domain, LinkedIn URL. Not all are required, but the more input data you provide, the better the enrichment results.

Step 2: Add Your First Enrichment Column

Click the "+" button to add a new column. Select "Enrich" and choose a data provider. For your first enrichment, we recommend People Data Labs — Find Work Email. It has the best cost-to-coverage ratio for work emails.

Map your input fields:

  • Full Name → map to your First Name + Last Name columns

  • Company Domain → map to your Domain column

  • LinkedIn URL → map to your LinkedIn URL column (if available)

Click "Run" and Clay will query People Data Labs for every row in your table. Results appear as they come back — usually a few seconds per row. You will see work emails populate in the new column.

Step 3: Add a Waterfall (Second Provider)

One provider will not cover every contact. People Data Labs typically finds emails for 50–65% of your list. To fill the gaps, add a second enrichment column with a different provider (Apollo is a good next choice).

The key step: set a run condition. Click the column settings and add a condition: "Only run if [PDL Email] is blank." This way Apollo only runs for rows where People Data Labs returned nothing — saving you credits on contacts already enriched.

This is the waterfall pattern. You can chain as many providers as needed, each one only firing when previous ones missed.

Step 4: Clean and Validate with Formulas

Add a formula column to consolidate your results. Click "+" → "Formula" and write a simple formula that picks the first non-blank email from your provider columns:

In Clay's formula syntax, this looks like: IF(PDL_Email is not blank, PDL_Email, Apollo_Email). This gives you a single "Best Email" column with the highest-priority result.

Next, add an email verification column. Clay has built-in email verification — add it as an enrichment column mapped to your "Best Email" output. This flags invalid, risky, and catch-all addresses so you only send to verified contacts.

Step 5: Add Firmographic Data

Beyond email, Clay can enrich company data that helps with segmentation and personalization:

  • Company headcount — use Clearbit or Clay's built-in company enrichment

  • Industry and sub-industry — for segmenting outreach by vertical

  • Technologies used — BuiltWith integration reveals their tech stack (useful for selling to technical buyers)

  • Recent funding — Crunchbase integration flags recently funded companies (higher budget, active buying)

Each additional data point makes your outbound more targeted. A message referencing their tech stack or recent funding round converts at 3–5x the rate of a generic template.

Step 6: Use Clay AI for Personalization

Clay has a built-in AI column type. Add an AI column and write a prompt like: "Based on this person's role as {Title} at {Company} which is a {Industry} company with {Headcount} employees, write a one-sentence personalized opening line for a cold email about GTM automation."

The AI processes every row individually, generating unique copy for each prospect using the enriched data in your table. This is personalization at scale — something that used to require an SDR spending 10 minutes per prospect now happens automatically across your entire list.

Step 7: Export Your Enriched Data

Once your table is enriched and validated, export the results:

  • CSV download — for manual import into any tool

  • Direct CRM push — Clay integrates with HubSpot and Salesforce to create or update contacts directly

  • Webhook to n8n — trigger an automation workflow that routes enriched leads to your CRM and outbound tools simultaneously

For production use, the webhook-to-n8n pattern is the most powerful — it lets you build automated pipelines where Clay enriches data and n8n handles routing, scoring, and sequencing without any manual steps.

What You Should Have Now

After following this guide, your first Clay table should have:

  • Your imported prospect data (50–100 rows)

  • Enriched work emails from 2 providers in waterfall sequence

  • A "Best Email" formula column with the consolidated result

  • Email verification status for every contact

  • Optional: firmographic data and AI-generated personalization

This is the foundation. From here, you can expand to more providers, add phone enrichment, build scoring logic, and connect to your full outbound stack. Every GTMinds client system starts with exactly this pattern.
